Ghost: the soul armchair

“A perfect synthesis of technological experimentation and formal research, the Ghost armchair designed by Cini Boeri and Tomu Katayanagi represents the desire to dematerialize the perception of function in favor of the user, who thus becomes the absolute protagonist of the space.”

Ghost means shadow, trace, semblance, spirit, soul. Only glass is able to transform this abstract concept into a physical object. Operating this transformation was the challenge met by Cini Boeri and his collaborator Tomu Katajanagi when they decided to give glass the shape of an armchair, that is, a container that contained not liquids but human bodies.

Cini Boeri, designer of Ghost, said, “I never thought I would make a glass armchair… My initial distrust of an idea that seemed unreal was overcome by the desire/challenge to see if it could be made concrete; and if Fiam would be good enough to pull it off.”

And instead, thanks to the technical and aesthetic wisdom of Vittorio Livi, Ghost was born, the glass armchair that was first presented at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1987 and was immediately awarded in a competition by “Interni” magazine that invited visitors to choose the most innovative product.
